GILLES MIHALCEAN
|
Born in Québec, Canada in 1946, the sculptor Gilles Mihalcean lives and works in Montréal. Having exhibited widely in Québec since 1969, he occupies a central position in contemporary Québec sculpture. A solo exhibition, Gilles Mihalcean : la sculpture narrative, held in 1992 at the Centre international d'art contemporain in Montréal was followed by a travelling retrospective exhibition (1975-1995) organized by the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal in 1995-1998.
Gilles Mihalcean employs a number of materials and ready-mades in the same sculpture. Many of his works entail several elements that he arranges along a trajectory, inviting the viewer to follow their path. In this sense Mihalcean constructs a visual narrative out of the capacity of material to stimulate our imagination. Moreover, the artist also writes and often accompanies his sculptures with poetry or prose. Curator Gilles Godmer likens Mihalcean's art to cinema: "As in cinema, there is a phenomenon of recognition or identification, in which spectators are suddenly confronted - through what is shown or suggested and what they have experienced or expected to experience - with a felt and recognizable emotion, one probably forgotten, long-buried, that is suddenly unearthed by a few kilos of plaster, glass and metal, dragging to the surface with a whole fact of their inner selves."
For the exhibition Growth & Risk Mihalcean is showing seven works, portraits whose features are revealed by assemblages which blend various found objects with figures sculpted by the artist. Their changes in scale, and juxtaposition of materials and forms, create metaphors combining humour and tragedy. Each sculpture is self-contained, but their alignment against the wall in this exhibition reveals recurring patterns that can provoke some exceptional interpretations among visitors.
