Meshworks, by David Blatherwick
"Most often I begin a painting with no vision of its final outcome. Using a vocabulary of basic structures, a freehand grid for example, I simply start some place on the empty canvas. Then somewhere else perhaps with a series of linked loops.
Eventually these two networks move toward each other, collide and overlap: competing with each other to occupy the space. Others follow and so it goes.
Now the individual elegance of a grid or looping line is lost into the noise of coexisting elements in the developing meshwork.
The work progresses like this toward a certain woven density at which the painting seems alive. Alert. As if something where about to happen.
While this approach could have to do with an automatist view of art making, it also comes out of response to technological and social changes that may be in the process of changing our perception of life and life forms. Acceptance of chaotic and self-organizing systems, the body as a hybrid form, the emergence of a centreless information network, and even the liberal idea of the multicultural society are all born from meshworks. That is, heterogeneous components combining to make an unpredictable yet viable forms.
Unlike modernist idealism, this outlook is inclusive and robust; giving way to a state of complexity that is surprising, real, fascinating. A state I prefer in art over any."
