Besides doomed divines, other theatrical spirits conjured up include East Village performance artist Jack Smith, the late Charles Ludlam (founder of New York City's Ridiculous Theatrical Company), even Canada's own Tanya Mars. At its best, camp exposes the questionable nature of gender, class and race, while also creating empathy for its subjects. Stephen Lawson and Aaron Pollard, under the moniker of 2boys.tv or, as their alter egos, Gigi L'Amour and Pipi Douleur create and tour multimedia performance pieces that conjure up phantasmagoric ghosts from the vaults of gothic and film noir popular culture. Based in Montreal, the duo has produced multimedia videos and performances in clubs, galleries and cabarets around the world.
A new, untitled installation for Crack the Sky inhabits a small garret at the top of a lonely stairwell. Using a projection, sound and performance ephemera, it becomes the setting for a miniature version of an expansive performance from a larger body of work, Phobophilia.
