Born 1970, Saskatoon, SKL. Lives and works in Victoria, BC.
Luanne Martineau produces the kind of work that attracts questions as to her increasingly complicated use of mixed materials wool, stretch nylon, loomed and knitted thread/yarns, graphite, ink, gouache and media. She produces intimate drawings that can reference the extremities of a Li'l Abner drawing as well as expansive, roomfilling stretch fabric installations that reference amoeba-like sea creatures. In play is a hybrid phantom of desire that lays visible a cornucopia of body parts, eyeglasses, hair, vegetation and other glimpses of the material world. There is a defined sculptural presence in her works that is produced when the identity of her subject matter is not made clear.
For Martineau, sculpture and drawing ("drulptures" in her artistic parlance) is a serious adventure that is constantly pushed to extreme consequences, to the point of reinforcing her grip on the material sculpture itself.
For Crack the Sky,Martineau presents two recent fabric-based "drulptures" and one new drawing.
