Gabor Szilasi was born in 1928 in Budapest, Hungary. He immigrated to Canada in 1958 and settled in Montreal one year later.
During the 1970’s he began a photographic series presenting various regions of Québec such as Beauce, Abitibi or Charlevoix. He returned to Hungary for the first time in 1980 and used the photos taken during his many future trips in a 1999 exhibition. Retour à Budapest includes photos of friends, family members or architectural sites, emphasizing his nostalgia and profound attachment to his native city.
Renowned photographer, Gabor Szilasi has also taught at several universities (Concordia or as a guest professor at the universities of Krakow and of Stanford in California). He has received awards from the Canada Council for the Arts and his exhibitions have been presented throughout France, Hungary, Poland, Italy as well as across Canada. In 2009, he received the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas from the Government of Québec. He is represented by Art45 in Montréal.
