Gilles Mihalcean Wins the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas 2011

The Board of Directors of the Centre international d'art contemporain de Montréal - CIAC are thrilled to announce that the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas 2011 was awarded to Gilles Mihalcean, influential Quebecois sculptor and member of the Board of Directors of the CIAC.

Over the past 40 years, Gilles Mihalcean has produced an œuvre both unique and original that has been recognized by art critics, museum conservators and his peers alike.

Mihalcean has produced work that is a testament to the imagination and identity of Quebec. His sculptures poetically convey at once the individual and the society in which he lives.

Gilles Mihalcean has exhibited his work in various galleries around Montréal : France Morin, René Blouin, Chantal Bélanger, Jean-Claude Rochefort and Roger Bellemare. A retrospective of his sculptural work was presented at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (in 1995, with a concurrently published catalogue), and the CIAC has shown his work three times (les Cent jours d'art contemporain de Montréal in 1986 and 1992, and the Biennale de Montréal in 1998).

Throughout his career, he has been the recipient of several grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, among which he received the Jean-Paul Riopelle bursary (2005-2007), awarded by the CALQ to an emeritus artist.

Beyond his active 40-year sculpture career, Mihalcean took up the cause of defending the role of artists in society. He has sat on several boards of directors of artists centres, has given conferences and created several public artworks. He also fights for international recognition of art from Montréal and Québec.

Gilles Mihalcean has supported the CIAC for several years. To finance its educational activities, he donated a sculpture which can be purchased by contacting Robin Varenas (robin.varenas@ciac.ca).
