Preface by the Curator of the Exhibition

The exhibition Passage(s) testifies to various themes in the visual arts: landscape, illusion, portraiture, social preoccupations, and various aesthetic trends, such as Pop Art and Conceptual Art.

Passage(s) has been adapted to suit the various exhibition centers of the Communauté urbaine de Montréal. The original shape of the exhibition has thus undergone transformations as to the choice and number of presented works.

The Fonds d'œuvres du CIAC was established in 1990. It is made up of works donated by artists having participated in one or another of the Cent jours d'art contemporain de Montréal, 1985-1996. The works were given to the CIAC with permission to sell, the generated profits allowing the CIAC to pursue its mission to educate and inform and to maintain its vocation: the promotion and exhibition of contemporary art.

Warm thanks are extended to all the artists.

Sylvie Raymond
Curator

A Word from the General and Artistic Director

The exhition Passage(s) is presented by the Centre international d'art contemporain de Montréal, a non profit organization founded in 1983 in order to present various activities in the visual arts:exhibitions, conferences and special events.

From 1985 to 1996, the CIAC produced the annual event, Les Cent jours d'art contemporain de Montréal, bringing together artists from Québec, Canada and abroad. The works in the exhibition Passages(s) bear witness to the artists that have participated in this events.

In 1998, The Cent jours will give way to La Biennale de Montréal: a unifying event for the visual arts scene in Montreal.

We are very grateful to the Conseil des arts de la Communauté urbaine de Montréal for the financial support received for the production of the exhibition Passage(s). The actions of the Conseil toward disseminating cultural production is in this sense exceptional.

We also thank all those who help make this exhibition accessible to the public in exhibition centers and in the Maisons de la Culture of the Communauté urbaine de Montréal.

Finally, we hope that you derive great pleasure in viewing these works and in reading the notes that accompany them.

Claude Gosselin
General and Artistic Director
